Indoor composting with a worm bin - Worm Factory 360
If you are looking for an indoor worm composting bin the Worm Factory 360 is a small, compact bin that is perfect for indoor use.

The Worm Factory 360 is a great choice. It is a well-established product with lots of positive reviews and one of the most popular on Amazon.

At just 16 inches square it takes up very little floor space, even in a small apartment like mine it fits with no problems. It can even easily be stored in a closet or under a sink.

The bin includes several trays where worms can live and compost your kitchen scraps. They fit snuggly and have a mesh bottom the worms can travel through.

Simply add food scraps to the bottom tray, then add another when it is full and add more scraps.

The worms will gradually work their way up to the new tray as they eat and compost the scraps.

You can then empty out the finished compost from the bottom tray and use it in your garden!

This means it will be much easier to use your worm castings without having to separate worms out of the bottom tray because they will all be higher up in your worm bin.

Why Have An Indoor Worm Composing Bin?

Indoor worm composting is a great way to reduce your food waste while also creating nutrient-rich compost for your plants.

Worms break down organic matter quickly, so an indoor worm composting bin is perfect for smaller households or apartments.

Setting Up An Indoor Worm Composting Bin

I am going to be setting up an indoor worm composting bin. I chose a Worm Factory 360 because it is a well-established product with lots of positive reviews.

I have a DIY worm composting bin made from 5-gallon buckets but I have not been able to get good results with it.

So I decided to try the Worm Factory 360 because I believe it is the best worm composting bin on the market today. It is a relatively small worm bin that does not take up a lot of floor space.

Can You Keep A Worm Bin Inside?

Yes, you can keep a worm bin inside. It is odorless and the worms will probably do better inside.

An outside worm bin will be subject to more temperature swings and worms like a stable cool environment.

So here is my worm farm unboxing video. This will be part 1 and I will film part 2 when my worms arrive.

How Do You Set Up An Indoor Worm Farm?

I don’t have my worms yet, unfortunately. I was waiting to see if there was a voucher with my worm farm so I could get a discount on them.

Unfortunately, there wasn’t one. I did find out you can order the Worm Factory 360 with worms for slightly more money and wish I had.

So now I will be ordering my worms and when they arrive I will have a video of setting up my worm composting bin and unboxing the worms.

Adding The Worms To My Indoor Worm Bin

So my worms arrived today. Yay! I prepared the first tray in my worm factory. I laid down a sheet of paper and covered it with a mix of coco, newspaper clippings, rock dust, and pumice.

I also added a few banana peels and some coffee grounds in one corner for the worms to eat. Then I covered everything with a piece of moist paper and put the lid on.

These composting worms arrived in great shape. I ordered 1000 worms but I am not going to try and count them. They clump up naturally as a defense but they were soon wiggling around and starting to travel in the bedding.

At this point, the best thing to do is leave them alone. They don’t like light so constantly peeking in on them is disruptive. So I won’t check on them for a few days.

Here is a quick video of me adding the worms to their new home.

ADDING MORE WORMS

Well, a lot of my worms did not make it. There were 2 large clumps that I thought were ok but probably died in transit.

So I contacted Uncle Jim’s Worm Farm and they said sometimes that happens and I could either have a refund or they would ship me another batch.

I had them send another batch. This time they had poked air holes in the box and the difference was like night and day. So I have a full worm bin and was happy they were so good about standing behind their product.

The Worm Factory 360 is an indoor worm composting bin that is well-established and has lots of positive reviews.

I believe it is the best worm composting bin on the market today because it is easier to use and maintain than a DIY worm composting bin.

Indoor Worm Composting Bin FAQ

Can you keep a worm bin indoors?

If you’re interested in composting but don’t have the space for an outdoor bin, you may be wondering if it’s possible to keep a worm bin indoors.

The good news is that, with a little effort, it is possible to maintain a healthy worm bin indoors. The key is to provide the worms with the right environment.

They will need a dark, moist place to live, and the bin should be large enough to allow them to move around freely.

Your temperature should not be too hot or too cold. Temperatures between 59°- 86° Fahrenheit will keep your worms happy

You will also need to add food scraps and bedding material on a regular basis. With proper care, your indoor worm bin can be a great way to reduce your food waste while also generating rich compost for your plants.

How do you start an indoor compost bin for worms?

For those who live in an apartment or otherwise don’t have access to an outdoor compost bin, starting an indoor compost bin for worms is a great way to reduce food waste and provide fertilizer for houseplants.

The first step is to purchase a worm bin (these can be found online or at some pet stores).

Once you have your bin, fill it with bedding material such as shredded newspaper or coco coir.

Next, add a layer of food scraps (avoid meat and dairy as these will attract pests). Finally, add your worms.

Once your bin is established, you can add food scraps on a daily basis. The worms will eat the scraps and break them down into nutrient-rich compost that can be used to fertilize houseplants.

Do indoor worm bins smell?

Worm bins are a great way to compost your kitchen waste, but many people worry about the smell.

Fortunately, if the bin is properly maintained, there should be no bad odor. The key is to keep the worms fed and the bin moist, but not too wet.

Worms will eat just about any organic matter, so you can throw in fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, and eggshells.

Once the worms have eaten their fill, the remaining compost will be a dark, rich soil that is perfect for plants.

And since the worms do all the work, there’s no need to turn or aerate the bin, so there’s very little chance of any unpleasant smells.

So if you’re looking for a simple and efficient way to compost your kitchen waste, a worm bin may be the perfect solution.

I can truthfully say there is absolutely no smell coming from my worm bin and if you want one too don’t worry about it smelling.

Do you need worms to compost indoors?

For many people, the idea of Worm Composting, or Vermicomposting, is a bit icky. The thought of encouraging worms to live in close proximity to their kitchen scraps might be enough to put them off the idea entirely.

However, there are a number of benefits to indoor composting, and you don’t necessarily need worms to do it.

Even if you don’t want to add worms to your compost bin, you can still compost indoors without them. There are a number of methods for doing so, and many of them are just as effective as worm composting.

Bokashi composting actually can help reduce kitchen waste.

There are also small compost tumblers that can be used indoors.

Finally, there are kitchen compost buckets that can be used without giving off odors.

So if the thought of worms doesn’t appeal to you, there’s no need to worry. You can still enjoy all the benefits of indoor composting without them. More here: How To Compost Indoors Without Worms (indoorvegetablegrower.com)
